Sun is needed
Here at My Green Bag, we like to do things properly. That’s
why we've decided to get some advice from the pros. So, this month we
spoke to Kimberly Merlotte who created Ever Ours, an up and coming online shop
that sells clothing and accessories. Sit back, relax with a good old cuppa
cyber tea and enjoy!
How did you decide to start up an online business and how much money did
you invest in your business at the start?
I started Ever Ours when I finished Uni. I couldn’t
find a “proper job” and the job I already had wasn’t giving me many hours. I
was so very poor, haha! So I spoke to my parents and they encouraged me to
start Ever Ours for some extra money. I started selling stuff at Car Boots and
markets, and started up the website. Never did I expect people to buy from it,
but over the year with a lot of hard work it became more recognised. Every time
I was notified of a new order I would get all excited. I started Ever Ours
with an initial £200 (the last of my overdraft and some birthday money). It was
a bit risky as I wasn’t sure what the products would be like and more
importantly if people would buy them, haha
-How did you get your brand known to the public?
I couldn’t thank bloggers enough, without their support and
encouragement over the year, Ever Ours wouldn’t be where it is today. I also
relied heavily on Twitter, its amazing how one retweet can increase your page
views. I didn’t have much money in my budget for advertising, I
suppose Ever Ours is now known to the public through, bloggers, twitter, blog
ads, giveaways and word of mouth. I cannot thank the bloggers we have worked
with, and my friends and my family for their help and words of wisdom.
-How much would you say working with bloggers and sending them free
products to review helped your sales?
Without a doubt, sending bloggers free products to
review has helped our sales so much. In some cases, once they have blogged
about particular products it can sell out that day. I really do think it’s the
best form of advertising.
-What's the best advice you would give to a young woman starting up an
The best advice I could give is to be paitent, organised and take risks.
At first, I used to get 2 orders a week, but the more time you spend on brand
recognition the more sales you will get, it’s something I have worked on all
year, it wasn’t something that happened over night. Ever Ours was a result of
risk taking, I have learnt that you have got to take risks in business in order
to succeed. Being organised is also key to success, make sure you document
everything in excel, keeps recipets, the more aware you are of your spending
the more aware of your profit. And finally, good luck J
